Billie Eilish Claps Back at Critics: “I Endured Years of Harsh Criticism for My Androgynous Style,” She Shares on Instagram
Billie Eilish recently addressed criticisms about her style evolution and responded to those who labeled her a “sellout” for embracing “feminine” clothing. Taking to her Instagram Story, the 21-year-old singer candidly reflected on the online comments she had come across regarding her fashion choices. She began by acknowledging the criticism she faced during the early years of her career, particularly related to her shirt preferences.
“In the past five years of my career, I faced relentless criticism from some individuals who ridiculed my tomboyish style and the way I dressed. I was constantly bombarded with comments suggesting that I would be more attractive if I conformed to traditional feminine expectations,” she wrote in the Instagram Story, which has since expired but has been shared on Twitter.

Furthermore, Eilish expressed her frustration at the response she has received from trolls regarding her shift towards embracing a wider range of clothing styles. She highlighted the contradictory nature of the criticism she faces, stating, “And now, when I feel comfortable wearing anything remotely feminine or form-fitting, I am immediately labeled a sellout. People question, ‘What happened to her?’ It’s disheartening to witness these reactions, claiming that I have become just like everyone else, without considering the individual I truly am.” Eilish also noted the repetitive nature of these comments, dismissing them as unoriginal and lacking genuine understanding.

Expressing her frustration, Eilish didn’t hold back in calling out these critics, referring to them as “true idiots” and “bozos.” She urged her followers to embrace the concept of allowing women to simply exist without judgment or limitation.
In a subsequent post, Eilish directly addressed the assumption that she should adhere to a singular sense of style. Employing sarcasm, she shared a fun fact, stating, “Did you know that women are multifaceted?! Shocking, right? Believe it or not, women can have diverse interests.” She emphasized that femininity should not be equated with weakness, highlighting the absurdity of such assumptions. In another post, she further emphasized the idea that wanting to express oneself differently at various times is not only normal but also an essential aspect of individuality.
Eilish concluded her post by strongly criticizing the online trolls, referring to them as “women-hating a** weirdos,” clearly expressing her disdain for their negative behavior.
It’s worth noting that earlier this year, the renowned singer openly shared her dislike for social media. In an interview on the Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend podcast in March, she revealed that she had taken the step of removing all social media apps from her phone, indicating her desire to distance herself from the negative aspects of online platforms.
She also noted how she wasn’t comfortable looking at social media posts that focus on her.
“I’m a person who goes on the internet… And to change nothing about the person I am or the life that I live, and to just keep doing what I do over the years, and slowly the videos that I’m watching and the things that I see on the internet are about me. ‘Eww, stinky.’ I don’t like that,” she explained
In a September 2021 interview with Vogue, Eilish opened up about her evolving sense of style. She shared that as a child, she had a deep affection for big dresses and would wear them daily. However, she attributed a shift in her fashion choices to struggles with body image, stating that it was the reason she had been dressing the way she did for several years. Eilish’s candid remarks shed light on the impact body image issues can have on personal style and self-expression.
